 Abstract:
Objective:
Hyperactive disorder is among the most common disorder in childhood. This conducted clinical trial verified the hypothesis in how far cranial osteopathic techniques improve the symptoms of children with hyperactive syndromes. Further, this study was used to address the question of whether the technique of the “release of the tension of the intracranial membranes” causes a sufficient improvement of the symptoms or whether a combination with the treatment of dysfunctions of the sphenobasilar symphysis is more practical.
Material and methods:
Participating in the study were thirty patients aged between four and eight years with hyperactive disorder diagnosed in medical and psychological examinations. The children were divided into three groups with 10 of them in each group. The following interventions were performed: Group 1: Release of tension of the intracranial membranes and treatment of the present dysfunctions of the sphenobasilar symphysis. Group 2: Release of the tension of the intracranial membranes without treatment of the sphenobasilar symphysis. Group 3: Sham treatment. In each group four treatments were given at four-week intervals. The primary parameter was the psychological test for measuring the degree of hyperactivity based on C.K. Conners. The secondary parameters were the osteopathic dysfunctions before and after treatment and the observations of parents, educators and teachers after treatment.
Results:
The treatment with cranial osteopathic techniques in group 1 revealed a statistical significance with regard to the primary parameter. A clinically relevant improvement (28,7%) of the score of the Conners-test was recorded over time. The secondary parameters also showed this positive trend. Within group 2 and 3, no statistical significant improvement could be demonstrated.
Conclusion:
Four treatments with cranial osteopathic techniques (tension release of intracranial membranes and treatment of dysfunctions of the sphenobasilar symphysis) over a period of 16 weeks resulted in having a positive impact on children aged between four and eight years with hyperactive disorder. Further at random controlled trials, especially with a holistic osteopathic approach, are needed to confirm these positive first signs.
