Abstract
The purpose of this study was to decipher the role of patient guidance in osteopathy. Information on thesubject in literature is scattered. As a result, we concluded to approach the subject by interviewing osteopaths. This work is mainly directed to students of osteopathy and osteopaths.

The theoretical frame of reference in this study is based on the information on patient guidance in
osteopathic literature. We developed an interview form based on on the theoretical frame of reference
and our experiences. We interviewed four osteopaths in the fall 2009. The interview was structured so
that it described the osteopaths’ general approach as well as their approach to patient guidance.

The subject of patient guidance was found to be wide and an inseparable part of osteopaths’ work. The
manner in which osteopaths applied patient guidance is widely individual. In the context of this work it seems that osteopaths do not use a lot of direct therapeutic exercises as part of their work. However, they feel that patient guidance is an extremely important part of osteopathy.

This study offers the reader thoughts on different aspects of patient guidance as it is seen in context
with osteopathy.
