Objective: The objective of the study was to determine the micronutrient intake of an elderly hospitalised population and to determine the contribution of nutritional supplementation to the overall micronutrient intake of this population. Methods: An audit of food and nutritional supplement intake was conducted in two elderly wards of the Charing Cross Hospital, London. All food and drink ingested over a 24 hour period was recorded using the weighed food method. The intake of all nutritional supplements in both tablet and sip-feed form was also recorded over the same time period. The micronutrient content of the food was analysed using the Dietplan( programme.
Results: It was found that the intake from diet alone of vitamin D, potassium, magnesium, selenium and iodine was significantly below the RNI. The intake of vitamin B6, vitamin B12, vitamin C, sodium, phosphorus and chloride was found to be significantly higher than the RNI and no significant difference between the intake and RNI was found for vitamin A, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, folate, calcium, iron, copper and zinc. It was also found that supplements made a large contribution to total intakes of vitamin D (41.7%), iron (25.5%), calcium (20%) and folate (16.6%).
Conclusion: This study's finding are broadly comparable to both the National Diet and Nutrition Survey and other studies' findings for most micronutrients. The study has shown that there is an important distinction to be made between dietary provision and actual intake when assessing the diet of the hospitalised elderly. A policy of vitamin D supplementation for all patients should be considered in the light of this study's findings of the ubiquity of inadequate vitamin D intake in the elderly. - presented at
