Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between muscle energy techniques (M.E.T.) and their effects on contralateral hamstring muscle electromyographic activity, as measured by electromyography (E.M.G.).
35 male subjects, between the ages of 20 and 35 years, from the student body of the British College of Osteopathic Medicine participated in this study. Five subjects were randomly allocated into a Control Group and thirty into the M.E.T. Group. A test leg, on which the M.E.T. was to be performed, was randomly allocated to each subject. The surface electromyography biofeedback machine was used to measure E.M.G. activity of the contralateral hamstrings.
E.M.G. recordings were taken for a five minute duration before intervention: a M.E.T. involving 3 repetitions and 20% of maximal voluntary contraction, or 1 minute rest (control). E.M.G. recordings were then taken after intervention for a further five minute duration.
A matched paired, two-tailed T-Test revealed that M.E.T. produced a significant affect on E.M.G. activity in the contralateral hamstring muscle group (p<0.05). Further analysis, using a matched paired, one-tailed T-Test revealed that M.E.T. produced a significant increase in E.M.G. activity in the contralateral hamstring muscle group (p<0.05). The control group showed an overall decrease in E.M.G. activity in the contralateral hamstring muscle group, although this was deemed insignificant (p<0.05).
It was concluded that the application of a M.E.T. to the hamstring muscle group did not only have a significant affect on the E.M.G. activity of the contralateral hamstring muscle group, but induced a significant increase its' E.M.G. recordings. However these results can only be considered approximate due to the inaccuracies inherent in E.M.G.
