Abstract
Osteopathy is a system of fundamental laws, which form the basis of teaching in all existing osteopathic colleges. Optimal functioning of the body requires optimal nutrition to the tissues, thus, in view of the osteopathic philosophies, it must also be essential to assess the nutritional aspects. Osteopathy and nutrition complement each other, providing for the body an optimal healing environment. The objective of this study was to discover whether osteopaths', within three regions, gave nutritional advice to their patients'. There is limited research on the subject of combining treatments of osteopathy and nutrition and inter-referring between the two therapies. Seven hundred and sixty one fully registered osteopaths' employed in London, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland received postal questionnaires. The aims and objectives of the study were to gauge osteopaths' knowledge of nutrition regarding certain conditions, and to determine whether osteopaths' of differing regions viewed the importance of nutrition differently. Osteopaths' in the study were questioned on other complementary subjects in order to blind the study and encourage a genuine response.
A total of two hundred and forty two questionnaires were returned, two hundred and seven from London, eight from Northern Ireland and twenty-seven from the Republic of Ireland. The results were categorized into two sections including nutritional knowledge and understanding and nutrition in treatment. Migraine is the most common nutrition related condition seen in practice but patients' do not always receive nutritional advice as part of their treatment. Statistically, 73% of patients' request nutritional advice, with 27% receiving dietary recommendations.
72% revealed that nutritional improvisation incorporated with osteopathic treatment is beneficial and results in a good prognosis. 73% are regularly presented with patients' requiring nutritional assessment, and 48% recognize that they do not possess adequate nutritional knowledge to assess and diagnose in this area. It was considered important to incorporate a greater need for nutritional evaluation and diet modification for patients' if necessary.
