Abstract
Objective - To compare the prevalence of hockey injuries between female and male players.Summary of Background Data - Injuries whilst playing hockey are common in both female and male players. Previous research, which has looked at males and females separately, found that lower level players were more prone to injuries. These injuries occurred most in the lower limb, especially in the knee for females. Studies that have also looked at the correlation between position and injury rates found that midfielders were most prone to injury.
Subjects - The subjects used were from West Hampstead Hockey club who replied to the questionnaire. One hundred players replied, which included sixty females and forty males.
Method - A questionnaire was sent out to 160 players with a time limit of one month to reply. The questions asked were to help establish the general lifestyle of the player, their fitness, level of hockey and information about their most recent two injuries.
Results - Non-parametric Mann-Whitney tests comparing the total number of injuries in male and female players found no statistical difference (P = 0.520). A further non-parametric Mann-Whitney test found a significant difference between the injuries sustained in the higher divisions compared to lower ones. The lower divisions incurred more injuries.
Conclusion - No significant difference between the injury rates of female and male players but differences were found between the areas that most injuries were sustained. In females more injuries occurred in the ankle, foot, knee and lower back. Whereas in males more injuries were sustained in the ankle, foot, upper leg, upper limb and head. The implications of this study in relation to osteopathy have given insight into the cause of injury, which can be used to improve the treatment and prevention of injuries in the future.
