Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study examined and compared the effects of a 6.5% naturopathic carbohydrate solution (A), a 6% commercial sports drink (B) and water (C) on athletic performance when consumed 30 minutes before and during exercise. Ten fit and healthy subjects (mean VO2max 50.74 ml/min/kg) cycled at 60% of maximal work capacity until exhaustion on three occasions each separated by at least 7 days.
When carbohydrates were consumed, the time to exhaustion was significantly greater than when consuming (C). Mean times (S.D.) to exhaustion were 54 (+19) min. (A), 44 (+21) min. (B), 35 (+16)min. (C). The improvement in time to exhaustion was 26% to 54% higher than (C) when (B) and (A) were ingested respectively. The greatest improvement (154%, p<0.05) in time to exhaustion was seen with (A).
There was a significant difference (p<0.05) between the average carbohydrate consumption of (A) (50 gr) and (B) (45 gr) due to a carbohydrate concentration difference. However, the difference in the carbohydrate concentrations was probably too small to account for the variance in the performance seen in (A) and (B) since there was no difference in the average carbohydrate consumption rates (p>0.05) . No difference (p>0.05) was found in the average fluid consumption when comparing (A), (B) and (C) nor in the palatability of (A) and (B).
Therefore, this data suggests that the ingestion of (A) significantly improves performance when compared to (B) and (C) after its consumption 30 minutes prior to and during cycling at intensities equivalent to 60% of maximal work capacity.
