Abstract
ABSTRACT
Objective: the purpose of this study was to compare energy expenditure (EE) estimated by a seven-day recall questionnaire (7DR) and a physical activity diary (PAD). Also to determine whether EE estimated by a 7DR and maximal oxygen uptake (VO2 max) was comparable.
Design: A group of 9 college students aged 24.4 ( 6.4 years participated in the study comparing EE estimated by a 7DR and PAD. EE by a 7DR and VO2 max was determined in 33 college students (24.6 ( 6.2 years).
Results: High correlations were observed between the 7DR and the PAD mean MET (r = 0.09), and mean TEEE (r = 0.98). Estimates of EE were greater for the PAD than the 7DR. Positive correlations (r = >0.08) were found between sleep (r = 0.95), and high activity (r = 0.85). Recall was not, however, highly correlated with low activity (r =0.67), and no correlation was found between moderate levels of activty (r = 0.5). Finally, recall was not correlated with VO2 max (ml/kg/min).
Conclusions: The 7DR method may estimate the EE of the BCOM student population (r=>0.08) but has limited applications because it was both bias (underestimates EE) when measured against a PAD (p=<0.05) and imprecise when measured against VO2 max. The results are consistent with previous studies. For optimal validity, the 7DR and the PAD require good subject compliance and the ability to distinguish clearly different levels of activity.
