Abstract
The purpose of this survey was to ascertain whether the nutritional practices of elite master swimmers were sufficient to meet- the Recommended Daily Allowances set by the National Research Council (1989). Twelve, eight male and four female, National to Olympic standard swimmers gave their informed consent to participate in this survey. Swimmers were selected on the basis that they currently swim an average distance of 50,000 to 60,000 metres per week, and competing at a National standard or higher. The subjects mean (±SD) age, height, weight and body mass index (BMI) were, male: 33.25 yrs (± 2.05), 1.86 m (±0.09), 82.69 kg (±5.53) and 23.95 (±1.14) and female; 34.6 yrs (±3.8), 1.685 m (±0.02), 68.9 (±8.8) and 24.2 (±2.8) respectively. Dietary intake was recorded over a seven day period, during heavy training, with the use of a dietary assessment questionnaire. Special attention was given to the importance of maintaining their usual dietary habits, and accurately describing the quantity of food ingested. Results of the questionnaire were analysed using a computerised nutritional analysis programme, which provided information on the swimmers total daily intake, and a breakdown of each diet into macro nutrient and micronutrient intake. This data was then used to provide comparisons against RDA set by the National Research Council (1989), and related published research. The results showed that both male and female subjects consumed, in comparison to the set RDA; relatively normal amounts of macronutrients but large amounts of micronutrients. In comparison to the related published literature they were shown have low intakes of carbohydrate and large amounts of fat. It was concluded that the elite swimmers consumed within the recommendations for macronutrient content, whilst with the exception of Vitamin E, Copper and Iodine, micronutrient intake was well above the recommended values set by the National Research Council (1989).
