Abstract
A survey was conducted between June 2000 and June 2001 to determine the validity of using the two clinics, Hampstead and Soho, to increase the diversity of clinical situations offered to students at the British College of Naturopathy and Osteopathy. Theaudit of 776 patient records is presented regarding, gender, age, occupation, seasonality of attendance, area of residence, site of complaint, onset and nature of onset, general epidemiology, presenting history, diagnosis, status at end of treatment and reasons for cessation. Sixty one percent of all attending patients were female. The most common attending age group for both sexes and clinics was 25-34 years. The results were also considered in the context of the demographics of the location of each clinic and patient data; the number of treatment sessions, number of practitioners seen and differences between predicted and actual treatment sessions. The major differences determined between the two clinics was the higher proportion of patients from professional occupations at Hampstead (63%) compared to Soho (41%). More patients at Hampstead were from the local borough (46%) compared to those at Soho (23%). The study also found a possible relationship between the number of practitioners seen and differences in final treatment success. The study identified areas common to both clinics such as; patient general lifestyle and health, site of complaints, and diagnosis. The study concluded that both clinics tended to offer a patient profile that had moresimilarities than differences and that a clinic experience based in a more deprived London borough may offer a greater diversity of experience for students. Future research could be based on these findings.
