Abstract
Hypermobility, genetic or acquired? This project was carried out to gain a bit more of insight into the hypermobility the causes and prevalence of this hypermobility phenomenon. Research papers determined that some people were susceptible to hypermobility for a number of reasons. and certain other factors influenced the mobility of joints. A comparison experiment was carried out between Asian Indians and Caucasian English subjects, all of whom are living in England. The main experimental hypothesis stated that Asians have high levels of laxity within joints compared to that of Caucasians. It was also investigated whether hypermobility effected the prevalence of recurrent joint dislocations, joint complaints, ligament sprains and low back pain. The experiment consisted of analysing the range of movement in the metacarpophalangeal joint, in the hand, in 60 selected volunteers. 30 Asian Indians and 30 Caucasian English subjects were measured for degrees of extension at the metacarpophalangeal joint with the aid of the Leeds Goniometer. Subjects were screened for certain confounding variables and this was in the form of a questionnaire. Only subjects who met the necessary criteria were included in the study. The results displayed a significant improvement in joint hypermobility in Asian Indian men compared to English Caucasian men. However although previous research states that some hypermobile patients do suffer from aches and pains in the absence of disease this was not proven in this study. Although a criteria for patient management in the hypermobile patient was included in the discussion.
