Abstract
This study was conducted in order to collect the experiences, ideas and opinions regarding touch of nineteen randomly chosen osteopaths, who had been qualified for five years or more, with the view of developing a conceptual framework for osteopathic touch. It was intended that the research should also form a platform from which future investigation concerning touch could begin. A qualitative interview method of information collection was employed and the data produced was analysis using grounded theory. The importance of touch, as a tool for gaining information, for communicating with patients and as a means of treatment was highlighted. It was also found that the osteopaths believed osteopathic touch to be an expertise acquired through practical experience. Finally, the importance of the patient in an interactive touching process was emphasised.
