- BACKGROUND: Interprofessional collaboration between GP’s and other health care providers such as osteopaths is important in healthcare. However, little is known regarding the interprofessional collaboration between GP’s and osteopaths in Flanders. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore Flemish GP's views and experiences on their collaboration with osteopaths. METHOD: Flemish GP’s were recruited through snowball sampling. Semistructured individual face-to-face interviews were conducted to determine GP’s views and experience on osteopathy and to reveal facilitators and barriers regarding interprofessional collaboration. RESULTS: Sixteen GP’s (response rate of 42.1%.) participated in this study. None of the participating GP’s could give a clear definition of what osteopathy is and only one third of the GP’s described to have personal experience with osteopathy. GP’s described the following facilitating factors for collaborating with an osteopath: having a diploma as a physiotherapist, good experiences from patients, more scientific evidence regarding the benefits of osteopathy, being officially acknowledged by the medical board. DISCUSSION: GP’s cannot give a definition of osteopathy and interprofessional collaboration between GP’s and osteopaths is rare. Yet GP’s tend to receive positive feedback from patients about osteopathy. CONCLUSION: If osteopathy was acknowledged by the medical board and was supported by more scientific evidence, this would create more possibilities for collaboration of GP’s with osteopaths.
