Abstract
Objective: The aim of this study was to explore the views of United Kingdom (UK) osteopaths in assessing patients with breathing pattern disorders (BPDs) and to survey their use of four breathing intervention techniques. Method: 400 UK osteopaths were invited to complete a postal questionnaire. Results: Osteopaths identified BPDs in 10% of their patients. They used somatic thoracic dysfunction, posture, smoking status and category, locus and rate of breathing in their assessments. Osteopaths had prior knowledge of all four breathing therapies, but most commonly recommended diaphragmatic retraining exercises. Buteyko Breathing Technique (BBT) and diaphragmatic breathing exercises were recommended to improve breathing regulation, create long term benefit, and engage patients in their own management. Hatha Yoga and mindfulness meditation were recommended for relaxation. Long term commitment was a strong disadvantage in all breathing therapies. Contraindications to recommendation included serious pathologies and patients who struggled to perform the exercises. Barriers included managing patient expectations and patient compliance. Conclusions: Future research into osteopaths’ experiences and qualifications of breathing therapies and their management plans when advising an exercise, are recommended.
