- Abstract
- Objective: To review models underpinning biomechanical analysis of static redundant kinematic chains (RKCs) together with their mechanical support structures, the biomechanical implications of these models, and the usefulness of each conceptual approach in osteopathic clinical evaluation of biomechanical function. Methods: Keyword searches of online databases identified 97 relevant articles for review, of which 59 journal articles, 2 books and 1 patent were successfully retrieved. Articles were evaluated using subject appropriate criteria selected following consultation with experts in the field of mathematics, due to the substantial mathematical content of the retrieved literature. Results: Summary charts for each reviewed paper were prepared, including for each paper, an evaluation of the purpose of the biomechanical model presented, and the degree to which this purpose was fulfilled. Conclusions: The literature sample contained numerous methods for biomechanical evaluation of static RKCs and their support structures, in terms of equilibrium and stability, using both qualitative and quantitative analyses, and through a variety of structure types. In each case, qualitative analyses were found to be more amenable to use within clinical scenarios whereas quantitative analyses were required to validate their use in the first place.
