- Abstract
- Background: Football is popular in England and is a significant source of GP consultations. Osteopaths, as primary healthcare professionals, are likely to see some football related injuries. There appears to be a lot of literature on types of injuries and mode of onset but very little on manual therapy treatment of these injuries. Objectives: The aim of this study is to investigate the role osteopaths may play in the treatment and management of football injuries. Method: A purposive sample of ten osteopaths was recruited from osteopaths registered under the Osteopathic Sports Care Association (OSCA) within London and Surrey. Semi-structured interviews allowed osteopaths to talk about their experiences and opinions in depth. Results: Seven main themes arose after coding: Background Information, Injury Profile, Treatment Approaches, Management Strategies, Recovery Influences, Barriers to Recovery, and Healthcare of Footballers. Emergent codes within these themes were: Preventative Work, Screening, and Multidisciplinary Care. Conclusion: The study generated useful themes regarding osteopaths’ experiences of working in multidisciplinary teams and preventative work that could enhance recovery in football injuries. Teams function best when there is clear communication between all parties, egos are left out of the treatment room, and there is respect for each practitioner and what they can bring to treatment.
