Abstract
Objective: To investigate the effects of soft tissue massage on the sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscles and stretch to the pectoralis major muscles on Forced Vital Capacity (FVC) in people with asthma. Subjects: A purposive sample of 20 non-asthmatic students and 17 asthmatic students studying at the British School of Osteopathy. Method: An experimental with an intervention group of 17 BSO students with asthma and a control group of 20 non-asthmatic students was measured for each subject before and after intervention using a spirometer. Treatment for each group involved two minutes of soft tissue massage to the SCM on each side and one minute of pectoralis major stretch on each side, performed by a qualified osteopath. Results: Paired t tests showed significant differences in pre and post test FVC scores within each group (p0.05). Conclusion: Soft tissue massage to the SCM and pectoralis major stretch improved the Forced Vital Capacity in both asthmatic and non-asthmatic students.
