- Abstract
- Introduction: Iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS) is the most common cause of lateral knee pain in runners and represents between 1.6% and 12% of all running related injuries. The aim of this study is to appraise the methodological quality of published studies investigating the role of the hip abductors in the development of iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS) to determine the justification for their inclusion in appropriate therapeutic interventions. Method: Online literature searching revealed 45 suitable papers which were appraised for quality using appropriate criteria (PRISMA for systematic reviews, Furlan (2009) for RCTs and Dear and Abbey (2004) for non-RCTs. Results: There is a wide variety of studies, ranging in quality and methodology. Multiple relationships between ITBS and lower extremity kinematics were found Conclusion: ITBS is caused in part by altered mechanics of the hip and lower extremity but there is inconclusive evidence to show that a weakness of the hip abductors is the sole cause.
