Abstract
Background: As triathlon increases in popularity and its participant base expands, so too does the occurrence of altered immunity and overuse injuries due to excessive training. Osteopathy concentrates on the diagnosis and treatment of problems related to altered body mechanics, function and posture. Therefore Osteopathy tend to treat the cause by improving or withdrawing the symptoms. Objective: This narrative review explores clinical issues when treating patients involved in multidisciplinary sports, such as triathlon. To review the relevant literature concerning the four main impacts of triathlon training and events on the immune system, pulmonary function, cardiac function, and musculoskeletal function will be addressed. Methods: A systematic literature search identified 14 systematic reviews, 9 Randomised Controlled Trials (RCTs) and 33 Non-RCT’s from the last twenty years, which were objectively reviewed using appropriate standardised assessment criteria. Articles that scored the most points in each subgroup were rated the highest for quality. Results It is the work of an osteopath to recognise and diagnose the cause of these symptoms, and the involvement of the immunological, pulmonary, cardiac and usculoskeletal implications for a triathlete, when investigating and treating an injured patient who is a triathlete. Conclusion: Mobility of the body is of the extreme importance to the triathlete. Poor immunological, pulmonary, cardiac and flexibility in the joints and muscles, will prevent the body from performing at its optimum and is often a contributory element to injury. Osteopathy can help prevent as well as treat injuries. It would be beneficial for osteopaths to better comprehend triathlon, triathletes and the demand placed on the immune, pulmonary and musculoskeletal systems of triathletes, as well as any psychological implications. This would lead to more effective treatment and management of the patient.
