- Abstract
- Background: An evidence base does not currently exist for hyperventilation syndrome (HVS) management. Learning to juggle has been seen to reduce symptoms of anxiety, which is closely related to HVS. Objective: To quantitatively investigate the effect learning to juggle has on HVS. Method: Subjects (n=38) were randomised into two groups: the control and intervention group. A pre and post-test measurement (duration 6-weeks) was made for both groups using the Nijmegen questionnaire. Only intervention group members learnt to juggle in this period. Subjects: 38 healthy undergraduate students were recruited from the British School of Osteopathy. Results: A significant reduction in score was seen on the Nijmegen questionnaire (p=0.05). Conclusions: Juggling shows promise as a therapeutic intervention. However the population based healthy cohort is not representative of HVS sufferers so more research is needed addressing the limitations of this study.
