Abstract
Objective: To investigate the injury experiences of amateur rugby union players and to explore the coping strategies that they adopt in order to return to competition and the implication that this may have to osteopathic treatment. Methods: A qualitative research design incorporating semi-structured interviews was used to gain an insight into the world of the rugby player. Ten rugby players, who had experienced injury which had prevented them from playing competitive rugby, were interviewed and the data was analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Results: The main emergent themes identified included the negotiation of risk, experiences of pain, injury coping strategies, psychological consequences of injury and the role of personality and identity in the injury process. Discussion: Negative psychological, emotional and behavioural consequences of injury appear to influence the on-going intrinsic negotiation of the ability to cope with injury when it is threatening to the rugby player’s identity. The player’s personality and availability of social support also appear to influence the coping mechanism. This is of interest to the Osteopath as it may have implications towards the development of an injury management plan.
