Abstract
Background: There are an increasing number of cases of Work-Related Upper-Limb Disorder (WRULD) amongst medical sonographers and managing them is complex. Understanding sonographer awareness of osteopathy could inform osteopaths of ways to educate and promote the benefits of osteopathy in managing WRULD. Objective: To identify the current prevalence and treatment methods of WRULD and how to promote osteopathy as a management and treatment option. Method: A 5-minute online questionnaire. Subjects: A convenience sample of 81 participants that responded to the notice on the community board on the Society of Radiographers website and to a West Midlands Sonographers Action Group email. Main Outcome Measures: Patients self-reported experience and treatment of WRULD and their awareness and use of osteopathy. Results: A high prevalence of WRULD was reported, with increasing incidence with increasing years in the profession. There was a high level of awareness of osteopathy amongst participants, with self-referral being the main method of choosing to visit an osteopath. A majority of participants suffering from WRULD visited a physiotherapist instead. The primary participant concern about osteopathy was the cost of treatment. Conclusion: Promoting osteopathy as a management and treatment option among sonographers and employer’s occupational health and/or GPs can be beneficial. However, there is a need for further research into sonographer knowledge and current management of WRULD.
