Abstract

Objectives: To establish osteopathic students’ perceptions of osteopathy and how it compares to chiropractic. Subjects: First year and final year students studying at The British School of Osteopathy (BSO). Method: Ten semi-structured interviews were carried out and coded using elements of the grounded theory analysis. Results: Subjects perceived there to be differences between osteopath and chiropractic although there was some confusion about the actual nature of the differences. Chiropractic was perceived to be based more around the neurological system, treating the ‘spinal lesion’; compared with osteopathy, which was seen to be more holistic in its method of diagnosis and treatment. Conclusion: There was a lack of clarity about students’ perceptions of the chiropractic profession and how it compares to osteopathy; however students are of the opinion they could learn more about chiropractors, from the chiropractic profession and suggested that more communication between the two professions would be a positive step for future education.
