Abstract

Background: Benign hypermobility syndrome is a common, poorly understood multisystem disorder whose symptoms may drive the patient to seek Osteopathic treatment. Objective: The aim of this project is to gain a better understanding of the condition in order to inform osteopathic practice based on recommendations made using the best available evidence and to consider whether a multidisciplinary approach is needed in the management of the condition. Methods: Systematic computerised and hand literature searched for relevant up to date research and evaluation using methodological quality criteria. Results: Examination of research indicates that benign hypermobility syndrome remains poorly recognised with delay in accurate diagnosis leading to poor management of patients seeking primary health care. Conclusion: More research from the field of osteopathy is needed into this often mismanaged condition. Within the research field itself more randomised control trials and systematic reviews are needed to raise the quality of research literature available.
