- Abstract
- This project was carried out to compare measured burnout rates within the osteopathy profession and between different health professions, and to evaluate the relationship between burnout and demographic/work variables within osteopathy. Burnout was measured using a modified Maslach Burnout Inventory as a standardised questionnaire that included three dimensions of burnout: Emotional Exhaustion; De-personalisation; and Personal Accomplishment. Results obtained from 168 osteopaths showed low levels of burnout compared to professions working mainly within the National Health Service, and comparable levels to physiotherapists working mainly in private practice. However, a substantial minority of responding osteopaths, over 17 percent, reported high levels of emotional exhaustion. Variation in burnout rates was not accounted for by differences between osteopaths relating to demographic or work related characteristics. Further research is therefore required to identify factors that do account for variations in burnout levels.
