Abstract
Changes in passive stiffness is one of the characteristics associated with mal-adaptations in low back pain however, little is known of how much these changes occur when considering age, gender and activity level. The current study aims to compare passive stiffness of the hip extensor compartment of healthy rowers and non-rowers to determine differences of passive stiffness due to activity level when controlling for age and gender.MethodsThe passive stiffness of the hip extensors of (n=9) female senior rowers (age 27.9 ± 5.64, height 1.74 m ± 0.04, weight 74.4 kg ± 9.32), and (n=11) female volunteers (age 23.7 ± 2.28, height 1.64 m ± 0.08, weight 593 kg ± 7.0) was compared using a straight leg raise protocol.ResultsThere were statistically significant difference in moment between groups with rowers showing higher scores within both right leg t = 2.283 (P = 0.035), and left leg t = 2.749 (P = <0.013) scores. Strain energy also revealed that rowers were statistically significantly higher between groups for both, right leg t = 2.435 (P = 0.026), and left leg t = 2.16 (P = 0.018). Comparisons in stiffness did not reveal any such discrepancy between groups for either leg, right P = 0.938, left P = 0.884, however there was a convergent trend that differed from that of both moment and strain energy data.ConclusionThere are significant differences between rowers and non-rowers in moment and strain energy attributes during SLR suggesting that the training effect of rowing may alter passive stiffness characteristics of the hip extensor compartment during SLR.
