Abstract
IntroductionKinesio Tape is increasingly used in competitive sport as there is a belief that it may improve both functional and athletic performance. This prospective, single blinded, cohort pilot study investigated whether application of the tape improved the power of punch in Olympic boxers.MethodsTen non injured boxers in full training with the British Amateur Boxing Association volunteered to take part. Each participant was asked to punch the Digital Boxer Training Assistant, firstly with no tape application (control), secondly with athletic tape (sham) and finally Kinesio Tape. A ten minute rest period was given between each test group and the participants were blinded to which tape was applied. With each intervention the boxers were asked to punch three times with a minute interval between each punch. The power of the punch was measured in kilograms per square inch and a mean value of each intervention of every individual participant was calculated. Statistical evaluation involved one way analysis of variance using the Kruskal-Wallis test for non parametric variables.ResultsThe power of the punch was not significantly different between the two interventions and one control. This was consistent between all ten boxers (P= 0.817).ConclusionThe results of this pilot study do not support the claims that Kinesio Tape can be used to enhance athletic performance. However, this is the first study to specifically examine the effects of Kinesio Taping in boxing and therefore further research is required before a definitive conclusion can be made.
