Abstract
BackgroundOsteoporosis is a large scale problem, responsible for 2.3 million fractures annually in the USA and Europe. Components of the vegan diet may protect against the mild metabolic acidosis observed in those that follow the normal Western diet that may be responsible for lowering bone mineral density(BMD). ObjectiveWe investigated whether there was statistically significant difference between BMD of a vegan and omnivorous group. Then we analysed the relationship between potential renal acid load (PRAL) as a measure of dietary acidity and calcaneal broadband ultrasound attenuation(BUA) z scores as a measure of BMD. DesignBUA was measured to assess BMD in 252 vegans and 35 omnivores. Participants then completed the EPIC-Norfolk food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) from which a PRAL scores were calculated using Dietplan6 software. ResultsThere was no statistically significant difference between the BUA Z scores for the vegan and omnivore populations studied. There was a statistically significant difference between PRAL scores for vegans and omnivores (Mann-Whitney U = 1423, P = <0.001). There was no statistically significant correlation between PRAL and BUA Z scores in the vegan or omnivore groups studied. ConclusionsThe determination of BMD is multifactorial, of which diet is only one component. No relationship between dietary acidity levels and BMD was observed, but further trials with well adjusted for other variables need to be conducted before dismissing this new approach.
