Abstract
The object of this study was to determine the effect Kinesio Tape has on shoulder range of movement and pain levels in patients with a musculoskeletal disorder of the shoulder as compared to a sham intervention. Tape is commonly used alongside other treatment techniques by manual therapists, including osteopaths, in rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries. The majority of research on taping focuses on non-stretch tape. Kinesio Tape on the other hand has elastic properties and has gained considerable popularity in recent years, but there is still a lack of research on its use and effect. Fifteen patients clinically diagnosed with supraspinatus tendinitis or subacromial impingement syndrome received therapeutic Kinesio Tape and a sham intervention with their shoulder range of movement and pain levels measured before and after each intervention. The therapeutic Kinesio Tape group showed immediate improvement in pain levels after tape application (mean ± SD decrease, 3.3 ± 2.5; P=0.01). No other difference between Kinesio Tape and the sham intervention were found regarding range of movement. The results indicate that Kinesio Tape may be of some assistance to manual therapists in immediately reducing pain levels of musculoskeletal problems of the shoulder.
