Abstract
IntroductionOsteoporosis is an increasingly common debilitating disease in which bone mass is lost and microarchitechtural deterioration of bone tissue occurs. There are many factors that affect bone health including nutrition, exercise, menarcheal status, age, family history, weight, smoking and environmental factors. Physical activity has shown to increase bone mineral density, however, studies comparing its effects the vegan and omnivore populations has not been investigated. Materials and MethodsA cross sectional study of 65 vegans recruited from the Vegan Fair in Bristol and 33 omnivores recruited from the British College of Osteopathic Medicine completed a food frequency questionnaire and bone-specific physical activity questionnaire (BPAQ). The bone mineral density was measured using a McCue CUBA Clinical ultrasound heel scanner. A 2-sample t-test was used to analyse the data for low, medium and high BPAQ score groups in SigmaPlot11. ResultsNo statistical significant differences were found between the vegan and omnivore groups in any of the physical activity level groups. Omnivores showed a slightly higher BMD than vegans in all BPAQ groups. DiscussionThe study was limited due to the vegan and omnivore sample sizes, the lack of exercise intervention and the use of self-reported food and exercise questionnaires. To conclude, the study did not show any significant difference between vegan and omnivore BMD values at different levels of exercise, however, omnivores generally showed slightly higher BMD values. More research is required to determine differences in vegan and omnivores at different exercise levels.
