Abstract
ObjectiveTo audit the age, gender, presenting complaints, number of visits and outcomes of paediatric patients attending the British College of Osteopathic Medicine (BCOM) clinic. DesignData was collected on patients aged 16 and under at the time of their first consultation at BCOM osteopathic clinic from 1st October 2009 through 31st January 2014. The data was extracted from the database management programme DataEase. Patient demographics and relevant clinical information including presenting complaint, predicted and actual visits and predicted and actual outcomes were analysed. ResultsA total of 225 children consulted the BCOM clinic. Slightly more boys than girls consulted. A relatively small proportion of infants and toddlers consulted, and most children were between the ages of 5 and 16 (n = 139, 79%). For infants, unsettledness was the most common reason for consultation, for older children it was lower limb problems. Treatment outcomes were overestimated, and numbers of treatment sessions was underestimated. ConclusionThe relatively small number of children consulting at BCOM during the audit period makes it difficult to draw strong conclusions about clinical care. A standardised data collection tool would make the audit stronger and more easily comparable with other clinics and institutions.
