Abstract
PurposeTo compare the peak bone density of two student populations from different European countries and to examine the diet and exercise habits of each population in relation to their bone mineral density. MethodsBone mineral density was measured by bone broadband ultrasound attenuation of the calcanei for each student. Nutrition was assessed by completion of a validated food frequency questionnaire and the results were analysed by the programme ‘Dietplan’ to establish an average 30-day nutrient intake. Exercise habits were examined by use of a bone specific physical activity questionnaire (BPAQ) the results of which were used in a specifically designed calculation to generate a BPAQ score as a measure of the childhood, adolescent and current bone strengthening exercise undertaken. ResultsThe Italian students were found to have a marginally statistically significantly higher BUA than the UK students. The difference between the BUA Z scores was not significantly different. The results of this study were unable to identify any dietary or physical activity difference between the two student groups. ConclusionsAttainment of peak bone mass is multifactorial and further large scale longitudinal studies are required in order to establish the most important factors in achieving it.
