TITLE: Myopia: An osteopathic approach. RESEARCH TITLE: Research as to the effect of an osteopathic treatment on women with myopia: a cross-over single blind clinical trial.
BACKGROUND: Myopia is the most common refractive error. Its prevalence has increased significantly over the last 50 years to approximately 70% of the population in developed countries. It is estimated that 1.4 billion people globally are affected by myopia. This figure is expected to increase to 4.7 billion by 2050, which amounts to 50% of the global population. As much as 10% of the population will be highly myopic. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of a single osteopathic treatment on visual acuity and IOP in women with myopia. METHOD: Twenty-one women with myopia were selected. Each of them served as its own control. The uncorrected distance visual acuity for both eyes (VA2), as well as for the left (VAL) and right eye (VAR) separately were measured with the Tumbling E Eyechart. Ocular pressure was measured for the left (PRESL) and the right eye (PRESR) with the I-Care rebound tonometer. A total osteopathic treatment was used in the intervention group. RESULTS:  Twenty-one participants 37.86 ±4.50 years of age and 23.09 ±3.15 BMI were selected. The intervention group showed a significant improvement after control for the visual acuity on both eyes (Wilcoxon signed-rank test: p: 0.02), for the left eye (Wilcoxon signed-rank test: p: 0.01) and for the right eye (Wilcoxon signed-rank test: p: 0.003). The intraocular pressure decreased significantly after osteopathic intervention compared to control for the left eye (Wilcoxon signed-rank test: p: 0.03) and for the right eye (Wilcoxon signed-rank test: p: 0.002). DISCUSSION: Future research assessing long-term effects is needed. CONCLUSION: A significant improvement on visual acuity and a significant decrease of intraocular pressure in women suffering from myopia have been shown as a result of one osteopathic treatment.
