Abstract
This study sought to investigate the potency, legacy and durability of the uterine viscerosomatic reflex. It considered the relationship between self reported abdominal pain; self reported anxiety at menses and sensitivity of three distinct body sites (abdomen - 'segmental' site; biceps and quadriceps - non segmental sites ) in 25 women. Measurements of muscle sensitivity to pressure were taken 17-22 days following menses (ie. within the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle). The control group of 25 males recorded the abdominal pain and anxiety they experienced three weeks prior to testing. No correlation between abdominal pain and segmental sensitivity was found in the female group. (Numbers in the control group who reported pain were too low to analyze). A positive correlation was found between pain and anxiety and also between anxiety and segmental sensitivity in the female group. Significant differences were found between the groups for the non segmental sites but a value approaching the critical value was found for the segmental site. That the viscerosomatic reflex exists as a clearly identifiable and objective phenomenon is not supported by this research. These results indicate there is a need for further research into the physiology and objective identification of the viscerosomatic reflex. In addition it is suggested that this may be in part facilitated by greater interdisciplinary dialogue; not least to clarify the difference in semantics that appears to exist at present.
