Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between the degree of rotation of the lower extremity and the integrity of the medial longitudinal arch of the foot. Both on and off weight-bearing were taken into account. As far as researcher knows, no previous investigations have been made into this correlation, although the theory has been stated in several pieces of literature. Therefore, a method of measuring these two variables needed to be devised. This was a very time intensive process of performing three pilot studies before deciding upon the final procedure.Statistical tests for inter and intra-related reliability showed a very strong correlation between results. The results showed that there is a significant correlation between the degree of rotation of the lower extremity and the integrity of the medial longitudinal arch of the foot. A hypothesis for why three of the four significant correlations were on the left was devised and an idea for further research was put forward in light of this.It was felt that the most important significant correlation was between the active (i.e. weight-bearing) degree of rotation of the lower extremity and the active integrity of the medial longitudinal arch of the foot. This was because it was significant bilaterally. The implications of these results are that they reinforce the importance of observation and examination in a clinical environment. Treatment could also be positively influenced by the confirmation of another predisposing factor to pes planus
