Abstract
The trigeminocardiac reflex (TCR) is recognised as a sudden decrease in heart rate (HR) of more than 20% of the baseline value, dysrhythmias or sinoatrial arrest may occur after stimulation of the trigeminal nerve. This reflex has been primarily noted by maxillofacial surgeons who have elicited the TCR during routine surgeries. However, it has also been shown this reflex can be elicited with water cooler than 10 degrees Celsius contacting the nasal mucosa. Exercise has a wide and deep plethora of research into a wide range of physiological effects. In this research, the effect of increasing cutaneous blood flow (CBF) by exercise will be utilised. The aim of this research is to decrease and increase CBF with the physiological effects of these two mechanisms. The future potential of this research is to be manipulated for pain relief and reduced injury healing times. 11 non-smoking BCOM students participated in a single blinded, randomised cross-over study. Baseline measurements were initially taken, followed by five 30 second phases and finally five minutes of recovery, all of which was recorded using a Laser Doppler Flowmeter (LDF). Phases one, three and five in the intervention consisted of placing a bag filled with the participant’s nose. Phases one, three and five in the sham consisted of placing ice a dry towel over and water over the participant’s nose. Phases two and four were always the exercise phase where the participant flexed their elbows and fingers repeatedly. The results were analysed using a two way repeated ANOVA which showed no statistical significance in the change in CBF during the intervention. However, there was a statistical significance in the increase of CBF during exercise (P=0.004). Although there is a measurable difference in CBF after eliciting the TCR, this was not significant. The data was collected using a LDF which has been documented as unreliable and has complications with inter-subject comparisons.
