Abstract
ObjectivesThe aim of this current study is to assess medical practitioners and nurse’s perceptions, attitudes and practices in referring patients to osteopathy within the United Kingdom. MethodsThe participants were recruited via social media platforms such as twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn and email. Medical practitioners and nurses that are currently working within the NHS infrastructure and or private practice primary health care facilities based within the United Kingdom regardless of their nationality or country of qualification. The exclusion criteria included retired or non-practicing medical practitioners and nurses, and anybody else that did not hold a current medical or nurse’s accreditation that is not recognised within the UK. ResultsA Chi-squared and a Fischer Exact test analysis were executed to determine the relationship between the following variables: It was found that gender and knowledge of osteopathy were not statically significant. X2 (1, N=35) = .723, p = .395; gender and perceived effectiveness were not statically significant. X2 (1, N=35) = .178, p = .673; gender and referral. X2 (1, N=35) = .070, p = .150; age range and knowledge of osteopathy were not statically significant. X2 (1, N=35) = .563, p = .211; age range and perceived effectiveness were not statically significant. X2 (1, N=35) = .036, p = .850; age range and referral were not statically significant. X2 (1, N=35) = .001, p = .972; profession and referral were not statically significant. X2 (1, N=35) = .224, p = .894; have you ever been treated by an osteopath; and referral were not statically significant. X2 (1, N=35) = .012. p = .914. 1545 ConclusionThis study has allowed for insight into medical professional’s utilisation and referral patterns to physiotherapy more than any other manual therapy that the NHS are able to refer to. The medical professional’s views of what an osteopath does are predominantly limited to joint manipulation, treatment of back pain and massage.
