- Abstract
- BackgroundThe illusion of explanatory depth is a well-documented phenomenon. It is the belief that one understands how something works in more detail than they do in reality. There are numerous reasons as to why this occurs, from simple overconfidence in one’s own knowledge to not having previous experience of having to externalize one’s internal thought process. Objective This study will aim to investigate whether the illusion of explanatory depth is relevant to the clinical students at the British School of Osteopathic Medicine regarding subjects that they are taught and have to use in their practice. Methods A randomized, case-control study was performed on thirteen volunteers from the 3rd and 4th year groups from the British College of Osteopathic Medicine. All participants completed a questionnaire rating their knowledge on 20 topics on a 10-point Likert scale T1). Their knowledge on 3 topics was then probed, with the participants reevaluating their knowledge on four occasions for each topic (T2-T5). The ratings were collated, and the data was analyzed as a whole and as 2 sets of subgroups based on gender and year group.AnalysisA Kruskal-Wallis one-way analysis of variance on ranks and a Tukey test were used on the combined data. A two-way analysis of variance was then used on the two sets of subgroups. In the combined group, there was a significant difference between T1 and T4 (q=5.841, p
