Abstract
Background At the British College of Osteopathic Medicine (BCOM), the osteopathic profession is taught in a distinctive way, offering great insight on naturopathy and the principles that osteopathy shares with it. It is the one of the few osteopathic colleges that grants their post-graduates the possibility to register as naturopaths with the General Naturopathic Council. Relatively recent developments have led osteopathy to become a recognised allied healthcare practice in the UK whereas naturopathy still lack regulations and recognition from the main primary care.Aim Under these recent developments of change, students from BCOM receive training in both subjects and use the tools and techniques in conjunction with clinical settings. The aim of this study is to understand the final year students’ perspective on the integration of naturopathy into their practice and in their future as practitioners.Methodology A questionnaire will be used as the data collection method, to which a total of 39 candidates responded, and, of which 26 were current BCOM students and 13 BCOM alumni. The questionnaire was divided into six different sections, with a total of 41 elements. The 5-point Likert scale was used to show agreement/disagreement levels. The scores for each section were added up and compared for group mean differences using a Pearson’s Chi-squared test to analyse the differences between the two groups (students vs. osteopaths). Results No statistically significant difference was found between the groups in any of the analysed sections. Minor differences in other scores were discussed and some hypothesis explored. Conclusion Due to the small response rate no meaningful statistical trends were found. The study might have helped exploring an area of possible further research in how the osteopathic academic training translates into the actual practice and how practitioners develop their treatment style.
