Abstract
Background Eating disorders and abnormal eating behaviours are common in young women in Western countries. These diet-related conditions tend to be chronic, persistent and associated with psychosocial and physical impairment ObjectivesThe study aims to assess the BMI of young women enrolled in higher education institutes in London. It also aims to explore the frequency of diagnosed eating disorders and abnormal eating behaviours as well as eating related concerns. MethodsFemales (n=105) from 6 high education institutes in London, UK were invited to participate in the study by answering both Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire and Three Factor Eating Questionnaire-R18. The mean age was 21years (SD=2.49; range 16-25years). Mean body mass index was 22.65 (SD=3.94; range 16.0-34.8). Data derived from the questionnaire was tested for the occurrence of abnormal eating behaviours and disorders. ResultsEating disorders were frequent in 7.6%. Anorexia nervosa has affected 3.80% while bulimia nervosa has affected 2.8%. The occurrence of objective binge eating episodes was reported in 52.3%, whereas excessive exercise as a compensatory behaviour to overeating was reported in 40.9%. Shape concern affected 99% and eating concern affected 44.7%. Three Factor Eating Questionnaire-R18 internal factors were reliable on this sample. Results showed high prevalence of emotional eating. A significant correlation between body mass index and both emotional and uncontrolled eating was found. ConclusionThe frequency of eating disorders including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and atypical disorders were within the limits reported from different regions. Young women suffer from excessive shape and weight concerns. The frequency of abnormal eating behaviours was considerably high. Further research should examine eating behaviours and disorders in larger and widely distributed samples.
