Abstract
BackgroundSuboccipital muscle inhibition is reported to increase hamstring muscle flexibility. The effect of suboccipital muscle inhibition on hamstring flexibility has not yet been compared to a direct hamstring stretching technique. ObjectiveTo compare the immediate effect of suboccipital muscle inhibition and a hamstring muscle energy technique on hamstring flexibility. Methods Twenty participants were recruited, and a randomised cross-over design was used. All participants experienced suboccipital muscle inhibition, a hamstring muscle energy technique or a control on three separate occasions, one week apart. Hamstring flexibility was measured immediately pre- and post-intervention using straight leg raise and active knee extension tests. Two-way repeated measures ANOVA and post-hoc Bonferroni t-test was performed for each measure. ResultsA main effect of group x time (P < 0.001) was seen for both the straight leg raise and active knee extension tests. A statistically significant difference was seen in straight leg raise for both suboccipital muscle inhibition and hamstring muscle energy technique (P < 0.001), and for control (P < 0.05). A statistically significant difference was seen in active knee extension for hamstring muscle energy technique (P < 0.001), but not suboccipital muscle inhibition (P = 0.181) or control (P = 0.899). ConclusionsBoth suboccipital muscle inhibition and hamstring muscle energy technique increase passive hamstring flexibility measured with a straight leg raise test. However, only hamstring muscle energy technique increases active hamstring flexibility measured with an active knee extension test and it is therefore more effective.
