- Abstract
- The assessment of all patients in a holistic manner has been implicated in osteopathy by various literature reviews. Dysfunction in the social, affective, cognitive and spiritual aspects of a patient can have an important role in a physical illness. This study was designed to explore the way in which osteopaths gained this kind of information in their use of verbal communication. Qualitative analyses of case studies were performed by using a model of patient-centred, or practitioner-centred behaviour by the osteopath, and comparing this to the information elicited in these aspects of their patients. The results showed that for the osteopaths involved, a practitioner-centred approach can reveal a holistic picture of a patient as well as a patient-centred approach, but needed many more questions and probes by the osteopath. Another interesting finding was that by using patient-centred behaviour at the beginning of the consultation, holistic information was accumulated to complement the manifestations of the physical complaint that were elicited by using a practitioner-centred style.
