- Abstract
- An interview study was conducted to ascertain whether osteopathy is currently viable as a complete system of medicine. Reportedly it was practiced as such incipiently, whereas nowadays it seems focused on the musculoskeletal system and particularly peoples' backs. From reading early osteopathic literature key factors were identified which appeared fundamentally important to its practice as a complete system. Based around these factors five interview questions were formulated. Fourteen osteopaths were interviewed of whom four work outside of the BSO. The transcripts were coded for emergent themes. Most interviewees were of the opinion that osteopathy is not a complete system and that it has realised its limitations. Others felt that it has the potential to be complete but is not practiced as such. There seemed to be some concern over the possibility of osteopathy losing its unique identity.
