- A qualitative study was conducted amongst fifteen osteopaths to investigate the impact their pregnancy had on their practice of osteopathy. The research hypothesis was that, during pregnancy, practice is disrupted from a treatment and logistical perspective. The study involved interviewing the subjects using a semi-structured approach. Eight of the interviews were conducted over the telephone, and seven were conducted in person.Specific areas of investigation were:The physiological and physical changes during the pregnancy;The effect of pregnancy on the choice of treatment, techniques and handling; The clinical adaptations;The changes to palpatory abilities;The changes in logistics i.e. working schedules, maternity leave;Advice the subjects could give from their experience of practice during pregnancy.The results were inconclusive insofar as, in all areas, some of the subjects reported that their pregnancy had had no impact. However, the information gathered made it possible to draw trends from the experiences reported. The following points were concluded from the results.A healthy pregnancy does not prevent the practice of osteopathy.Osteopaths adapt their treatment to pregnancy without difficulty.Pregnancy does not always disturb practice to a great extent in terms of logistics.The advice that the subjects of this study would give to osteopaths who plan a pregnancy are along the lines of self-care, time management, and support in practice.Osteopathy was recognised by most subjects to be a profession particularly well suited for women planning to have children.
