- Abstract
- The study aimed to investigate how often osteopaths refer their patients with low back conditions for yoga exercises. In November 1998 to January 1999, a cross-sectional survey of 48 osteopaths and 80 yoga teachers was conducted. A questionnaire was used to collect information on age, the number of years the respective professions has been qualified, and the frequency osteopaths referred patients for yoga exercise. The knowledge yoga teachers have on various back conditions was compared with the knowledge osteopaths consider yoga teachers should have. The yoga exercises taught to patients with back conditions were explored in detail and the suitability of these exercises for patients with back conditions was examined. Although subject to certain methodological and analytical limitations, this study showed that there was a discrepancy between the expected knowledge and the actual reported knowledge yoga teacher's possess. Many osteopaths were unable to identify the style of yoga class they refer their patients for even though the osteopaths may be familiar with the yoga teachers teaching methods.
