- Abstract
- This study investigated the effects of cross-fibre soft tissue manipulation on forearm skeletal muscle glucose metabolism. After the manipulation of the right arm, an injection of 18FDG (radioactive glucose analogue) was administered to 20 patients in the experimental group. 20 patients in the control group were also given the injection but did not receive the massage. The 18FDG uptake was then measured using a Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scanner. A feasibility / retrospective study was also undertaken where 22 previous scans were analysed, to establish the effect of arm dominance on 18FDG forearm uptake. The results showed that the patients in the experimental group had relatively lower uptake in the arm receiving the massage compared to the patients in the control group, who did not receive the massage. These results were subtle but statistically relevant (p < 0.05). Conflicting results on the affect of arm dominance on forearm glucose metabolism were found and were therefore inconclusive.Osteopathic cross-fibre soft tissue manipulation was shown to affect skeletal muscle glucose metabolism. A subjective reduction in muscle contraction and tone was achieved by the soft tissue manipulation of the forearm. As the muscles' energy requirements are then thought to be lower, the muscles, in theory, require less glucose and ATP for energy production.
