- Abstract
- This study investigates the current system of self-assessment of clinical capabilities within the BSO clinic focusing on the student self-assessment process. Specifically, the research is directed towards identifying levels of use and understanding of self-assessment processes amongst final year BSO students. Relevant literature describing practice in higher education and related health care fields is reviewed with an emphasis on the validity and reliability of different methods and potential outcomes of self-assessment. The research involved administering a baseline questionnaire to two groups of students, a control group and an experimental group. This aimed to identify beliefs about self-assessment and self-assessment methods currently in use at the start of the autumn term. Following this the experimental group received teaching in the use of self-assessment methods and skills. The questionnaire was then repeated for both groups, at the end of term. This data was analysed for between and within group changes. Statistical analysis was performed to identify any changes that had occurred in self-assessment practice. Qualitative analysis was undertaken to identify further which helped or hindered the self-assessment process. The results obtained indicated no significant difference between the two groups. The practice of self-assessment however declined significantly for both. The main conclusion is that self-assessment that promotes 'reflective practice' is essential if the student is to maximise the opportunities for learning in the clinic context. Recommendations are made about how this might be best achieved and specific methods are advocated to enhance current practice in the BSO clinic.
