Abstract
Background: Stroke is a life-threatening condition that can lead to brain injury, disability and possibly death. The importance of rehabilitation and aftercare post-stroke is vital for Quality of life (QoL). It has been reported that the risk of stroke decreased by 25% in people who carried out a high standard of physical activity and by 17% for people who carried out moderate intensity, compared with people who performed low-intensity physical activity. Follow-up is important to keep patients on track and reduce phycological effects caused by their ailments. Objective: The aim of this study is to critically appraise the literature, of randomised control trials (RCT) regarding the question: “Does the effectiveness of rehabilitation and aftercare for stroke sufferers enable functional independence and QoL?” Design: A Structured literature review from RCTs. Methods: A systematic search of relevant electronic databases using relevant keywords and filters. To identify relevant studies, Boolean logic was used, and filters were used to fit the inclusion and exclusion criteria: RCT, English language, full-texts, humans, published between 2003-2018, aftercare. The following databases were used: Cochrane Library, Google Scholar, Science Direct and PubMed. Studies were summarised and compared to previous findings. Results: The literature review yielded numerous articles addressing stroke rehabilitation and after care with follow up. 15 articles were identified, 8 of which were considered and reviewed as they fulfilled the criteria. All the selected journals were RCT’s. The articles were assessed and scored for quality using the PEDro scale and all were rated medium to high. Stroke rehabilitation, after care and follow-up were the main outcomes measured in all studies. Discussion: To see how effective stroke rehabilitation was in improving QoL to sufferer’s aftercare, therefore helping with recovery. Did the literature give a clear overview of methods used showing improvement of patient’s prognosis and QoL post-stroke. Conclusion: All trials reviewed noted improvement in participants who engaged in some form of rehabilitation plan. Follow-up time for most of the trials were minimal and concentrated on patients with mild to moderate stroke. Results from this study indicate further research into bespoke rehabilitation plans is needed to assess the efficacy to enhance patient outcomes against standard rehabilitation and to understand the importance of follow-up testing.
