- Abstract
- Seventy-nine final year student osteopaths at the British School of Osteopathy were the subjects of this research project and each were given a questionnaire to complete and return. The response rate was seventy – five point nine percent. The research project aimed to establish if there was any consistency between the perceptions of the future of osteopathy of final year British School of Osteopathy students and their own plans for clinical practice. The future of osteopathy is defined in terms of interaction between osteopathy and other health care practices. The assessment involved establishing which factors are considered important in subjects’ perception of the future of osteopathy and their own plans for clinical practice. It was found that there was a positive consistency between the ‘perceptions’ and ‘plans’ in the majority of respondents with regards to the importance of following factors:- The co-operation of osteopathy and both orthodox and complementary medicine in a primary health care setting.- The interaction of osteopathic practice in both multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary contexts. There was a wide range in the levels of positive consistency between the ‘perceptions’ and ‘plans’ of respondents with regards to importance of working with other health care practitioners.General practitioners, midwives, acupuncturists and homeopaths had the highest positive consistency ratings ranging from 93.22% to 77.19%.Psychiatrists, masseurs, chiropractors and practitioners of spiritual healing had the lowest levels of positive consistency ratings ranging from 55.36% to 37.04%.
