- Abstract
- Many changes have occurred it the course of the HIV epidemic since its highly publicised beginnings in the early eighty’s. These changes are in both the medical and socio-cultural realms. Thanks to medical advances HIV disease progression is now manageable by the use of new drug therapies decreasing the number of moralities and resulting in increased numbers of people living with HIV infection in the western world. An estimated 25.000 people in the U.K. alone are estimated to be living with HIV (UNAIDS report 1998) with a global estimate of 30.6 million. As the care of these people becomes out patient based it is possible the numbers presenting to osteopaths may increase. This study aimed to assess the changes in the osteopathic community in terms of attitude, knowledge and experience with HIV and to summarise the role osteopathy may play with regard treatment of HIV infected patients.150 registered osteopaths were sent a questionnaire and a 64% return rate was obtained. It was found that attitude toward HIV was generally positive. The knowledge of clinically significant information was found to be low in comparison to knowledge on cross infection risk. In all a low number if respondents had had experience with HIV patients. In conclusion it was found that osteopaths on the whole are willing to treat HIV infected patients and are ideally placed to offer help to patients in terms of optimising and maintaining physical health. Support with in the profession however seems to be lacking with respect to education and awareness of the role osteopathy may play in treatment of HIV infected patients.
